FLASHBACK: MMS in the Big Apple! A Trip to JWT Ad Agency

On a frigid Friday morning, a few of us courageous MMS members bundled up and took a trip to the office of J. Walter Thompson Ad Agency in New York City. We were welcomed by Charae Warner, HR Business Partner for JWT New York. She led an informative and perceptive tour of the office that left our attendees enthused about working in the advertising industry.

We were also introduced to Keni Thacker, Executive Producer for Differenter & Sr. Event Technology Specialist, and Ralph Florio who is HR for Account Planning. (Ralph is a Rutgers Alum 🙂 and earned his Masters in Management!) Charae, Keni, and Ralph shared vital information about their job responsibilities and the culture of the J. Walter Thompson Agency, making it an attractive place to consider starting a career. Charae described JWT as the “most collaborative environment… it’s about working with people who care… I’m always able to learn what’s going on”. They also shared insightful advice about marketing careers, challenges, and qualities business students should be cultivating to ensure success. Keni spoke about the lack of diversity in the advertising industry. He mentioned that the main challenge of bringing diversity is “lack of awareness and preparedness”. However Keni is involved in combating that challenge through the Differenter Program at JWT: Continue reading

I Parlayed My Internship Into a Job. Here’s How I Did It.

This article was originally posted on www.bloomberg.com by Marissa Beaudoin, a 2014 graduate of Stonehill College, is a corporate communications specialist at Kronos, a supplier of cloud-based workforce management software.

This time last year, I was sitting in the same cubicle and at the same company as I am today, but as a college intern. Turning that summer position into a full-time job wasn’t easy, though. Here are some tips that may help get you from intern to in-demand employee:

Lynxsy Announces Startup Internships for College Students!

You guys asked for it:

Lynxsy now provides a portal to some of the coolest internships in the start-up world! Now you don’t have to be a graduate or a soon-to-be graduate to start your journey through the exciting foray that is a start-up career. Lynxsy connects non-technical students to start-up companies in a supportive way, giving both the company and yourself a chance to decide where you want to stay while making sure you’re getting paid for your time.

What kind of internship you ask?

“Sales Internships, Business Development Internships, Customer Experience Internships, Operations Internships, Marketing Internships, PR Internships, Social Media Internships, Community Manager Internships, Underwater Basketweaving Internships, internships where you might get bit by a radioactive spider, internships where all you do is listen to Drake songs and rank them in order of how many times he uses the word “girl,” internships that involve eating Cheetos for like 8 hours, internships for days!” – from the Lynxsy original blog post

And so many more! Start-up culture is fast-paced and for students who are hungry to get into the action and create something meaningful, for students who are independent and know that true power doesn’t come from suits, and for students who are feeling that desk-not-required vibe.

The Only Super Bowl Ads Worth Watching Again

The article is written by Yaroslav Imshenetsky, Co-Founder of @TheArbitrader and @RutgersBSchool Class of 2014. All views are my own. The full version you can find on medium.com

I understand. Your time is precious. There was quite a handful of ads shown during the Super Bowl. Not every one of them deserved our undivided attention (or the $4.5 million price tag, for that matter). To take it easy on your eyes and save time, here are, in my opinion, last night’s most unique and well-received ads:

Carnival Corporation – Come Back to the Sea

Why: It is a different kind of ad from Carnival. Instead of going with the usual happy music and festive families, Carnival tries to speak to our inner love for the sea. It captures this very well with beautiful shots of the water and JFK narrating in the background.

Relevance to the brand: This ad makes me want to rush into the sea right now, and if I am tired from endlessly swimming in it, I can board a Carnival cruise ship. PR success.
